Chapter 9
What follows is undignified. Palla and Wren dash into the space and apprehend Nightingale and Lark respectively, dragging them from the building and putting their hands in cuffs behind their backs. Nightingale is shouting in any second she isnât coughing, fighting Palla all the way, but with her hands restrained she cannot cast her spells and her body alone might as well be a mouseâs compared to Palla.
They all get out of the building. To Larkâs surprise, Wren does not release her hold on them once they are in the open air.
âAnd to what do I owe this colourful treatment, Wren?â Lark asks, lightly.
âUh,â Wrenâs pale complexion is pink with embarrassment, âPalla says you both need to be taken into custody. She believes youâre not taking the capture seriously. You might even be helping her, for all we know.â
âFor all we know?â Lark asks, eyebrow up. âI see. And since when do you work for the temple of War?â
âYou know I donât,â Wren retorts,â and I know youâre not helping her but⦠it didnât look great, Lark. I figure you can make a case to the Bishops. With me taking you, Palla could focus on her. And it worked, we got her. We got you both out of there before it collapsed on you.â
To make her point, the rest of the roof chooses that moment to give in, like a resounding if overly dramatic exclamation point. Lark glances up to the sky and all around them, half expecting to hear the laughter of the Trickster god.
âWell, then,â is all they manage to say, when they look back to a rare case of smug Wren.
âOr did you forget about that? Because you had your nice little chat going?â
Lark cannot admit to such a distinctly unimpressed Wren that yes, they had definitely entirely forgotten about that particular danger. They are determining what possible way they could sidetrack the conversation entirely when a pair of manacles is slapped on their wrist by Palla. The bar is passed to Wren for safekeeping.
âJust for a moment,â Palla says, turning back to Nightingale whose manacle bar is in Pallaâs hand already.
A ring is on Nightingaleâs middle finger and Nightingale goes to the specific effort of raising it individually as Palla lifts the hand. Palla snorts and yanks the ring off. A small, dark gem glistens on the band.
âFound the magic blocker,â Palla announces, turning the ring over in her fingers and tucking it into a pouch on her belt.
Nightingale sighs so loudly and dramatically that Lark cannot believe she is genuinely put out by the situation. For someone with smoke and soot covering most of her spectacles, she is as cool as a river.
âCan she teleport with those on?â Palla asks.
âIf theyâre the same, regular manacles you have on me, yes,â Lark says, âthough the manacles would come with her. She needs to be able to see her destination. I would suggest a blindfold.â
Nightingale whistles suggestively and Lark cannot help how their ears burn.
âYou truly
